Well-known singer John Joseph, who performs under the name Antigua Joe, has been spared a driving ban after a road-rage incident.

Joseph, 63, had struck a glancing blow to another car during the incident in June last year, sending the door cannoning into the other driver.

He had been due to stand trial for dangerous driving and assault causing actual bodily harm, which he denied, at Swindon Crown Court on Monday.

But after he pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving prosecutors said they would not seek a trial on the more serious allegations.

James Bromige, prosecuting, said Joseph had been annoyed by the driving of Stephen Bond at The Close, Warminster.

Believing Mr Bond had not indicated correctly, Joseph flashed his lights at him and sounded his horn.

Mr Bond pulled over outside the JB pub in Weymouth Street and got out, thinking Joseph was trying to alert him to something wrong with his car.

He went over to Joseph in his Chrysler Voyager and after the men exchanged words, Mr Bond returned to his car but, as he did so, he hit the wing mirror of Joseph's car.

Joseph then pulled out and as he passed Mr Bond's car he clipped the driver's door, which struck Mr Bond and bruised his leg.

Louise Harwood, defending, said Joseph, of Uplands Rise, Westbury, was trying to remove himself from the situation and had accidentally hit the other car.

In doing so she said he had a momentary lapse in concentration and he thought the sound of the contact was the other man hitting his car again as he drove past.

At the time of the incident, on the afternoon of Sunday, June 30, last year, Joseph was on the way to a singing engagement in Honiton, Devon.

Judge Tim Mousley QC said: "This was an unplanned incident which does neither of you any credit at all.

"You were in the wrong in the way you reacted and I am also satisfied that Mr Bond's behaviour was less than impressive."

Joseph's licence was endorsed with five point and he was fined £150.
