Pupils and teachers from schools across Trowbridge are backing the county town’s bid to get its own Monopoly board for a special 80th anniversary edition, ahead of the voting deadline.

Sarah Inman, a teacher at The Mead Community Primary, said: “Immy, Saskia and Libby in Year 6 said they liked the idea of Trowbridge having its own board, as it would be different.

“They thought Trowbridge should have the board, as it has good shops, a fabulous library, restaurants, cafes and a museum.”

Bev Kenyon, Walwayne Court School headteacher, said: “Our school is definitely backing Trowbridge’s bid to get its own Monopoly. It would be great for the town.”

Bellefield Primary School headteacher Steve Wigley added: “I think it would be very useful for the children for Trowbridge to get its own Monopoly board.

“It could benefit them from a history perspective and playing it could also help their maths skills, as well as being good for their teamwork.”

Trowbridge is up against four other regional capitals for the honour of having its own edition of the game.

It is competing against Dorchester, Exeter, Taunton and Truro.

The place that comes top of the poll will get its own customised board, with 22 property sites replacing the likes of Mayfair and Park Lane from the original.

Winning Moves UK, which is making this official version of Monopoly under license from the game’s owner, Hasbro, will count votes for the five contenders until midnight tomorrow.

The winning town will be announced in the spring.

Mayor of Trowbridge Glyn Bridges and community groups including the West Wilts U3A have already shown their support.

To vote for Trowbridge’s Monopoly honour, email election@winningmoves.co.uk or send a vote in the post to West Country, Winning Moves UK, 7 Praed Street, London W2 1NP.

The board will go into development once the winner is announced.

Fans of the game will be able to prove their South West property-buying prowess from October.
