With spring upon us we all tend to think about getting out into the great outdoors, whether just pottering in the garden or taking to the hills.

However if you're looking for an outdoor activity that could also introduce you to a new social scene then joining a club may be the answer.

The Lafarge Sports and Social Club boasts many different activities for all ages and abilities and with 62 acres of beautiful countryside and lakes, there's plenty of room to either let off steam or just relax and unwind.

If you're a keen golfer why not go along to the nine-hole golf course which has been part of the complex for over 30 years. The club has senior, ladies and junior sections and enjoys a busy competition season from April to October. If you're not sure whether golf's your game why not have an introduction lesson with the club's PGA professional who will take you out on the practice area.

For the casual golfer there is also a pay and play' facility which allows you to play all day for only £10 in the week and £15 at weekends or bank holidays. Contact details are shown below or wander along to the course starting office where there's always green keepers on site to help with any queries.

Alternatively the classic English pastime of bowls may be more to your liking. The very successful flat green bowls club has been in existence since 1970 and has both mens' and ladies' sections. The season runs from late April to September with league, club and friendly fixtures so if you're a seasoned professional or a beginner there's something to suit everyone - contact details are shown below. Why not create your own fisherman's tale with a big catch at the two-acre coarse fishing lake, which is well stocked with carp, bream, roach and perch - 700 fish were added to these waters last year alone. You will need a rod licence, which you can pick up from your local post office.

Both day tickets and season tickets are available from the local tackle shops shown below, and the lake stays open from dawn to dusk. It's particularly popular on warm summer evenings, but the hardiest anglers can be seen out in all weathers at one of the 30 pegs which are situated on permanent fishing platforms. For the competitive spirit there is a programme of matches and a licence exchange scheme run with other fishing clubs.
