THE Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning of south-westerly winds gusting to over 50mph at times in parts of southern England and south Wales tomorrow.

Forecasters say that winds may reach 60mph in some exposed coastal areas on Tuesday between 9am and 7pm.

The warning is for Bournemouth, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Isles of Scilly, Plymouth, Poole, Somerset, Torbay

A Met Office spokesman said: "The public should be aware that these gusts may cause minor damage to trees, and make travel tricky for the likes of towing vehicles.

"A rather deep and complex area of low pressure will bring windy conditions widely  but these winds will be strongest near the south coast in the morning, then more generally across south west England and parts of South Wales later in the day.

"Such winds would be quite normal in winter but rather less so, though not exceptional, in May, and with trees well into leaf now, and some extra holiday traffic around, some minor impacts are likely."

Rain is already described as persistent across Wiltshire this evening.

It will probably become lighter and patchier for a time overnight, but further heavy rain is likely towards dawn.

On Tuesday the Met Office says: "The rain will clear to the northeast through the morning with sunny spells to follow.

"Scattered heavy showers and the risk of gales will develop through the afternoon. Maximum temperature 15C."
