POLICE and fire crews who searched the Kennet and Avon Canal at Bradford on Avon for over two hours on Sunday night after reports a man had been pushed in by his girlfriend were following a false alarm call, it was announced this morning.

Specialised water rescue teams from Wiltshire Fire Brigade, specialist paramedics and police were called to Bradford on Avon Wharf, off Frome Road, after being told a man had ended up in the lock after a row with his girlfriend.

More than 20 firefighters were joined by several paramedics and police, spending two hours searching the canal without trace of the man.

This morning the HART paramedic service said they understood the call had been a false alarm, and Wiltshire Fire Service said they would not be resuming a search of the area.
