THE BIGGEST date on Christ Church Primary School’s calendar went off in style with its annual May fair on Monday, which raised more than £7,000.

More than 1,500 people braved the rain for the Bradford on Avon school's biggest fundraiser of the year which included Maypole dancing, Morris dancing, welly wanging, egg and spoon, wheelbarrow and sack races.

The annual fundraiser, now in its 38th year, regularly raises thousands of pounds for the school and also includes a charity fun run and a cake-off.

This year’s May Fayre organiser, Joanna Moyser, said: “It was a brilliant day out for the whole family. There really was something fun for everyone.

"We were amazed with how it went despite the weather. Most of us had never organised an indoor fair before but we were delighted to see that there was no way the rain and wind was going to dampen spirits.

"In fact, the atmosphere was positively energetic with much laughter and an all-hands-on-deck attitude. The barbecue and cafe were very popular and we ran out of milk as we were making so many teas and coffees, whereas we had Pimms left over.

"Around 1,500 visitors braved the intermittent rain to spend their money on stalls and entertainment and help us raise a total of £7,100 which will go to extra learning resources such as computer equipment, new play equipment and the latest software for pupils with special educational needs.

"We’d like to thank everyone who came out to support us, our sponsors and all the volunteers who made it possible."

The jamboree also had an ultimate wipeout, go karting, slides, workshops, tombolas, raffles, penalty-shoot-outs and much more.

Vicky Duncan of FOCCS said: "It was a great success despite the rain. We put everything indoors but it did not put a downer on it at all. Everyone had a great time which is the main thing."

Attendees were also treated to dance performances, talent and magic shows and food and drinks.
