How does Selwood Lifeline work?

Your Selwood Lifeline unit works by being connected to your phone line and a main electric socket.

It is very important that it remains connected at all times otherwise it will not work. Some people find it helpful to fix a piece of sticky tape across the electricity socket switch as a reminder not to turn it off.

When you need help you can either press the red emergency button on your Selwood Lifeline unit or your pendant this will raise a call to the call centre Hanover On Call. After a few seconds the Selwood Lifeline operator will speak to you and you can speak to the operator. You do not need to lift the phone's receiver. The Selwood Lifeline has one-way speech you must wait two seconds after the operator has spoken before you answer.

Can I use my phone in the normally way?

Yes, you can still make phone calls in the usual way.

There is an option with Selwood Lifeline that means you can answer a call by pressing your pendant.

What happens if I need help?

Call Hanover On Call by pressing the large red button on your unit or pendant.

The operator will ask you how they can help you and contact the most appropriate person. This could be a relative, a friend, your doctor or someone else of your choice.

What will happen if the operator cannot hear me?

Selwood Lifeline plus clients: The operator will contact you first on your landline if they get no reply they will contact one of your key-holders; if they are not at home the operator will contact the warden who is on duty Monday to Friday 9am -5pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am -1pm and they will be asked to come and check on you.

If the warden is off duty the emergency services will be asked to attend. Whatever happens, if a call is received at Hanover On Call from your Selwood Lifeline the operator will ensure that someone responds to it.

Selwood Lifeline clients: As above but instead of a warden being called the emergency services will be called.

What if the alarm goes off accidentally?

Don't worry! Don't try and stop it - just speak to the operator when you are connected and tell her what has happened.

Until you get used to wearing your pendant it is quite likely that you will make some accidental calls. If nothing else you will know the Selwood Lifeline is working properly.

How much does it cost?

Selwood lifeline: £2.88 per week excluding VAT. Selwood lifeline Plus: £4.62 per week excluding VAT.

If you have had a community care assessment you may be able to get help with the cost, ask your care manager or Selwood Lifeline for more information.
