WILTSHIRE'S Jordan Smith experienced defeat with Great Britain and Ireland at the weekend as Continental Europe beat the pre-tournament favourites 14.5 to 10.5 in the Ryder-Cup style team event.

In a competition where Ryder Cup contenders could prove themselves before September's running, Smith contributed two points from his four outings at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

The Bowood Golf Club member lost his opening match alongside Tyrell Hatton - with the pair going down on the last to Thomas Detry and Antoine Rozner on Friday.

Smith recovered well on Saturday, however, partnering Ryder Cup hero Tommy Fleetwood to a 2&1 win over Alex Noren and Thomas Pieters in the afternoon session.

In the morning foursomes, Smith and Robert MacIntyre edged Rozner and Adrian Meronk to a point courtesy of a one-up victory.

With GB&I losing by two heading into Sunday's singles matches, the Chippenham man was unable to help his team to victory as he lost 4&2 against Frenchman Victor Perez.

Poland’s Meronk sank the decisive putt in his one-up victory over England’s Callum Shinkwin.

Fleetwood said: “We obviously came here to win and wanted to do it for each other.

“The first thing I said at the start of the week was ‘your team-mates don’t remember if you play bad, miss a putt or lose a point’.

“But everybody remembers if you don’t give 100 per cent and I couldn’t have asked for any more from anybody this week.

“It’s been an amazing experience for me and I’ve loved playing with my team-mates.

“But they (Europe) clearly deserved it this week, they played the best golf and the winning team makes those moments count.”
