A planning application for a new residential development on the outskirts of Wiltshire's county town has been refused by the council.

The application proposed the construction of 36 dwellings on land north of Devizes Road in Hilperton, on the eastern edge of Trowbridge.

The site currently consists of a paddock and stabling block, which would have been demolished to make way for the new homes.

The application stated: “The appearance and architectural aesthetic of the proposed dwellings is appropriate to the local area and presents an opportunity to significantly retain open space to enhance local biodiversity.

“We believe this scheme will enhance the residential character along Devizes Road and retain the quality of the local area.”

Wiltshire Council received approximately 150 objections that listed concerns, such as increased air pollution and traffic congestion.

Hilperton Parish Council also objected to the proposal.

Wiltshire Council refused the application due to the potential impact on bats and the lack of necessary infrastructure required to mitigate the direct impacts of the development

It noted that the applicant did not secure affordable housing and financial contributions for the site.

Full details of the application can be found on Wiltshire Council's planning and building control public register.
