Police were called to the Bull Pit, behind the closed Swan Hotel in Bradford on Avon, after the “suspicious device” was retrieved from the water at around 4.20pm on Sunday, January 14.
Officers cordoned off the area while Explosive Ordnance teams were tasked with removing the concerning item.
The force has now revealed that the suspicious device is thought to be a “possible grenade” and was safely removed from the scene.
As the item has now been taken away police are unable to confirm if it was viable.
