Police say for the first time that they think Melanie Hall is dead

BBC Crimewatch screens a reconstruction of Melanie’s last movements, prompting more than 100 calls to the incident room in Bath
1998
Convicted killer John Cannan is interviewed in connection with her disappearance
August 1999
Police search the River Avon at Bath, between Cleveland Bridge and Chatham Row, but find no clues
December 2000
A friend of Mark Shillabier claims he boasted about killing Melanie. He is interviewed by police
March 2003
Two men are arrested in connection with Melanie’s disappearance. Farmland at Inglesbatch, near Bath is searched, as is a charity shop’s cellars in Chatham Row
April 2003
Police appeal for a witness called Shelley to contact them
August 2003
Two men arrested earlier in the year are released without charge
November 2004
An open verdict is recorded at an inquest held into the suspected death of Melanie Hall. Coroner Paul Forrest said he suspects she was murdered

Ten years after her disappearance, Melanie’s father Steve told the Wiltshire Times he still hoped someone would come forward with crucial information

A bag of bones are found by a maintenance worker at the side of the slipway at junction 14 of the M5
