INDOOR clubs Christie Miller and Clarrie Dunbar both suffered a frustrating weekend in national team competitions and the men’s regional Wessex League.

Clarrie ladies, despite sharing rink honours 2-2, had to give second best to arch rivals North Wilts in a third round Yetton Trophy tie, national inter-club championship, losing 86-70.

In the latest Wessex League central section group matches, holders Clarrie Dunbar were edged out 75-72 by Bristol and Melksham club Miller were beaten by Nailsea 90-67, winning on only one of the four rinks.

Dunbar ladies made a good start last Saturday against North Wilts in the Yetton leading across the board after five ends 20-15 and at 10 were 38-32 up and ahead on three of the four rinks.

But then the tide turned as North Wilts upped their game to move in front 56-53 at 15 ends and Clarrie could not stem the flow of shots and were 79-59 down at 18 and finally lost by 16 shots going down 86-70.

At home at Standerwick, Teresa King led her rink to a fine eight-shot victory over Alex Jacobs while away at North Wilts the rink skipped by Marcia Hartley enjoyed a 12-shot success.

But the heavy 38-9 loss sustained away by Ailsa Midwinter’s foursome proved decisive in the final analysis.

They were only 40-35 down at halfway and leading on two rinks. They still led on two rinks at 15 ends but were 67-52 adrift and never managed to get back into the match.

Miller’s sole rink success came from the four skipped by Paul Macdonald, who won their game 21-15, while Andy Moore’s rink from 19-15 up at 18 ends never score again over the last three ends and finally lost by one shot 20-19.

DUNBAR will certainly have plenty of chances to gain revenge over North Wilts and Bristol this weekend.

They play North Wilts in two national mixed competitions starting with the Top Club competition away in Chippenham tonight (Friday) at 6pm.

The match features five disciplines men’s and ladies two wood singles, mixed pairs, mixed triples and mixed fours.

Then the two clubs clash again on Sunday morning (10am) in the Egham Trophy, mixed inter-club championship with two rinks being played at Standerwick and two at Westcroft.

Meanwhile Dunbar men have the opportunity of revenge over Bristol on Saturday morning as they face them in a Denny Cup third round tie, top men’s national inter-club championship.

Clarrie will be missing Graham Shadwell as he flew to Cyprus on Thursday to represent England in the five-man team competing in the two week long Atlantic Games.

Shadwell teams up with Devon’s Louis Ridout in the pairs and in the fours he plays at three with Ridout (lead) and Berkshire duo Andy Knapper (two) and Robert Newman (skip).

Dunbar's Terry Perkins (skip), Brian Hawkins, Graham Shadwell (skip), Neil Collett, Russell Francis (skip), Andy Colebrooke (skip) John Freeman and newcomer Barry Barry (skip) helped Somerset on Saturday to a resounding 155-87 victory over Cornwall in the Liberty Trophy.

In round two of the inter-county championship on January 16, 2016, Somerset will face Dorset who knocked-out Devon in round one.
