JAZZ Carlin just did enough to make her way into the final of the 400m freestyle final this morning.

The 25-year-old, who admitted after claiming silver in the 800m freestyle on Thursday that she had picked up an injury, qualified for tonight’s final with a sixth quickest time of 4 minutes 10.78 seconds.

Swindon's Carlin, starting in heat four of five at the Aquatics Centre London, started strongly and was in second place at the 100m mark as she touched in second, just 0.11seconds behind leader Martina De Memme of Italy.

Defending European champion, Carlin, who now lives in Bradford on Avon, remained behind De Memme for the next 200m as the Italian stretched her advantage to just over a second.

In third place, fellow Italian Diletta Carli had closed the gap on Carlin to just 0.15seconds at the final turn and was able to overhaul the deficit in the final length as she claimed second, 0.89seconds behind winner De Memme.

Carlin had to settled for third place, 1.42seconds off De Memme, who set the fastest time going into the final, which starts at 4.57pm.

Carlin’s pace was just under seven seconds off her European Championship record of 4:03.24 set in 2014.
