THERE will be no rest for Swindon’s Jazz Carlin after the European Championships as she now locks course for the Rio Olympics.

The 25-year-old signed off her Euro quest on Sunday as she claimed a silver medal in the 400m freestyle to add to the silver she claimed in the 800m freestyle just three days prior.

However, with her first Olympic Games less than three months away, there is no let up for Carlin.

The Tigersharks swimmer kept up her training schedule despite being in the grips of a major competition last week, even training in between her heats and final on Sunday.

Carlin, who has been suffering with a rib injury, will be back in the pool today after just a day’s break but believes she is in a good place to target success in Rio de Janeiro.

“We have got a good block of training in and I can’t wait to get back in on Tuesday,” she said.

“I was a bit nervous after (Sunday’s) heats but I just stuck to my race plan and it paid off.

“It is a good result for me and great motivation for me going forward.

“There’s things I want to work on and fine tune with my coach as we really start to work towards Rio now, and this gives me a good platform on which to build.”

Meanwhile, former Olympic medallist and fellow Bradford on Avon resident Sharron Davies has been full of praise for Carlin and thinks that Rebecca Adlington’s British record of 8 minutes 14.10 seconds in the 800m is within her reach if she doesn’t let the pressure take over.

“Europeans, Commonwealths, Worlds; she’s done all of them absolutely right,” Davies told BBC Radio Wales.

“She’s an incredibly hard worker. She worries a little bit too much and needs to have more confidence in herself.

“The amount of work Jazz puts in is absolutely second to none.

“She’s not very far from Rebecca’s British record (Carlin’s personal best is 8:15.54), which I think is very firmly in her sights.

“I watched Rebecca melt down at the Olympics through nervous energy and there was so much expectation on her shoulders in London after the success she had in Beijing, so that’s what Jazz has got to be most careful of.”
