WILTSHIRE athletes Jenna Blundell and Imogen Dawe-Lane scorched to impressive victories in the final match of the UK Youth Development League Upper Age match at Yeovil on Sunday.

Dawe-Lane, who is a 15-year-old student at Dauntsey’s School in Devizes, ensured maximum points by winning the U17 women’s 80m hurdles B race in a personal best time of 11.85secs, lifting her to equal third in the South West rankings for U17 women and was runner-up in the U17 women’s 300m hurdles in 46.15secs.

Blundell, of Bradford on Avon, won the hurdles A race in 11.67secs, only a fraction outside the 15-year-old’s personal best of 11.57secs which is the fifth equal fastest in the UK this year, cleared 1.50m to finish runner-up in the high jump and clocked 13.02secs for second in the 100m.

The pair were both competing for the composite Team Avon, which comprises athletes from Team Bath, Bristol & West AC and Yate & District AC to ensure a strong representation in the league which caters for U20 and U17 athletes.

Several other Wiltshire athletes were also selected for Team Avon for the match at Yeovil.

The Howorth twins from Hilperton again took the first two places in the U17 men’s 1500m steeplechase with John winning the A in 4:44.54 and Robert the B in 4:47.28 while Corsham School’s Jade Littlechild won the 3000m in 10:38.90, while in the B events there were maximum points for Melksham Oak Community School’s Jordan Earley in the U20 men’s 100m in 11.47secs, Sheldon School’s Louis Torto in the U20 men’s 200m in 23.45secs and Marcin Olech of St Augustine’s College in the under 17 men’s triple jump with 10.75m.

There was also a fine double for 17-year-old Southwick sprinter Zoe Mattacks in the U20 women’s 100m in 12.85secs and the 100m hurdles in 16.68secs.

Second A places went to Westbury sprinter Will Kennedy in the U20 men’s 100m in 11.12secs and 200m in 22.62secs and Sam Roberts in the U17 men’s 100m hurdles in 14.12secs.

Trowbridge runner Caitlin Wosika was second in the U17 women’s 1500m in 4.45.37 and Imogen Hurst, who lives near Trowbridge, was second in the U17s javelin with 31.58m.

Fifteen-year-old Molly Bennett of Hardenhuish School was runner-up in the U17 women’s 100m B race in 13.36secs and high jump with 1.35m in what was her first attempt at the event.

In the team competition Team Avon (712.5) fell just short of Cardiff (794).
