TROWBRIDGE head coach Dan Jeffries believes there is plenty to work on despite their 40-29 success at Dorset Dockers maintaining their perfect start to the Southern Counties South season.

The hosts took the lead from a penalty before Trowbridge got themselves into the game and Max Day went over the whitewash after the visitors’ first real period of pressure.

Trowbridge, who were carrying three injuries from their opening day win over Devizes, took control of proceedings courtesy of two tries from Ashley Chalk, both converted by James Davies to establish an 18-point lead.

Dockers responded with a try on the break before the visiting forwards secured a penalty try and Lewis Jordan touched down before completing his hat-trick.

Trowbridge had a 32-point advantage with 15 minutes to go before they conceded three late tries to make the game closer than it should have been, something that left a bad taste in Jefferies’ mouth.

“There were elements of the performance that were really disappointing,” he said.

“We started and finished really badly and took longer to get the coach journey out of us than we should have and it looked like we might have got ourselves in a bit of trouble early.

“The last three tries of the game were all scored by them.

“The middle part of the game we controlled well enough that we had pulled away and it actually could have been a really comprehensive win.”

Trowbridge now turn their attention to the Dorset and Wilts 1st XV Cup when they face league rivals Marlborough on Saturday.

Having seen the competition ultimately lead to a trip to Twickenham two years ago, Jeffries is keen to do well but also sees it as an important game in their league campaign.

“They tend to be one of the better teams in this league,” he added.

“They have a big army contingent and at their best, they probably have the best 15 players in this league. We’re going to assume they are going to turn up looking for a game and wanting to throw the ball about.

“This cup is quite a big thing for Trowbridge so the big thing for the boys is not letting the pressure get to them.

“If we give a team like Marlborough a sniff we could find ourselves in a difficult situation.

“We have got Marlborough again in a couple of weeks and with having a good league season our priority, showing Marlborough how strong we are is really important.”
