LUKE Gullick is set to be thrown straight into the side for Chippenham’s biggest game of the season this weekend just days after returning from an international trial.

He has spent a month in Trinidad trying to impress national boss Russell Latapy and missed all of the club’s FA Cup run so far.

With Shaun Lamb suspended and Sam Allison a doubt, the Bluebirds may need to field a new left-side pairing and Gullick, who flew back to England on Monday, is likely to get the nod.

The Gloucestershire University student, who turns 23 on Saturday, is yet to receive international clearance to play in the game but both club and player believe it will be a formality.

Trinidad & Tobago’s failure to qualify for the World Cup means Gullick’s dream of appearing in the showpiece event are on hold, but he received positive feedback about his performance.

“It went well. I just need to keep playing, stay fit and hopefully I’ll get called up,” he said.

Gullick, who followed Chippenham’s FA Cup run on the Gazette and Herald website, played two games for Trinidad side Jabloteh and lined up directly against Latapy in central midfield for one of the matches.

Having spent five weeks playing in the centre of the pitch, he is now keen to shed his Mr Versatile tag and make the position his own.

“It’s where I played my first ever game and I’ve played there for the past five weeks in training,” he said.

“It’s good to be versatile but I want to stick to playing there now.

“It was totally different out there training in 35 degree heat at 9am and I feel like I’m a new player.”
