Irish in referendum
FOR some obscure reason citizens of the Republic of Ireland resident in UK are entitled to vote in our elections, including next month’s Referendum.
To add insult to injury the requirement for UK citizens not to have lived overseas for longer than 15 years does not apply to Irish citizens. You therefore have the anomalous situation that a UK citizen living in Gibraltar for 20 years will not be allowed to vote in the referendum whereas his neighbour, an Irish citizen, also resident in Gibraltar for 20 years, will be able to vote in the UK referendum next month.
As in many areas the UK citizen does not seem to get fair treatment from his own government.
